This is a review written about a stay in May 2021, with COVID restrictions still in place.

We stayed in a dog friendly room at Tewkesbury Park hotel in Gloucestershire. It was their Scrumbles break, which included: dog treats and food in the roomafternoon teathree course dinner in their bar (or restaurant if the pup is left in the room, but its the same menubreakfast

The room

The room itself was a gorgeous terrace room, with patio doors straight on to your own terrace. This wasn’t enclosed, but our pup loved sitting with us (on lead, obviously) watching the golfers. Golf is a huge thing at Tewkesbury Park! You can even take your dog on the course when you are playing, if you want to. From our terrace you could see lots of golf being played, it was fantastic. When we checked in to the room our pup loved the very fancy raised dog bed, and she was so excited to see the treats! They also included a proper dog towel in the room, which was a great idea – we had bad weather and muddy footprints would not have been a good look in such a gorgeous room!

Dog friendly rooms are often a bit tired, maybe even a bit stinky – not in this case! When we go back, even without a dog, we would love to stay in those rooms. Not only are they comfortable and luxurious, the view is just fantastic. There were White Company toiletries (albeit probably not enough – had I have asked I am sure they would have replenished) in the clean and luxurious bathroom. The bed is super comfortable too – a good night’s sleep is so important. Check out these tips for a better night’s sleep.

The food

Food, glorious food. This package included afternoon tea, however you also had the option to have it as a picnic. Although we weren’t overly blessed with the weather, we decided to eat ours as a picnic on our terrace, as we wanted the dog to settle in. It was a really delicious afternoon tea, exactly the one that is on their website, and we got takeaway cups of tea to go with it. They put it in a proper wicker hamper, too – a great touch, and had it been a sunny day we would have eaten it in the grounds.
For dinner, we ate in the Piano lounge. We took our pups bed into the restaurant with us and she settled quickly. The waiter brought her out some chicken and vegetables in a lovely dog bowl – happy dog! For us, we chose a gorgeous three course meal – asparagus, chicken and beautiful cheesecake for me. All the courses were cooked to perfection, and service was quick too, which was important to us with the dog.

Next day, we ate breakfast in the same restaurant. Breakfast is a buffet affair, but the buffet was in the main restaurant, so it meant a little walk. Currently, due to COVID, they serve the food to you. I think any buffet is difficult during a pandemic, and this was no exception. It felt a bit awkward and rushed – you couldn’t choose your own continental and it was probably the weakest area. However the food was gorgeous again, and they served the dog some sausage and scrambled egg, so again she was very happy!

Surroundings

The hotel is probably a 20 minute walk from Tewkesbury, but only because of the very long and beautiful drive. From the bottom of the drive its a 5 minute walk to the beautiful market town of Tewkesbury. We recommend visiting the historical Tewkesbury Abbey, and checking out the cakes at Parsons! You can also walk from the hotel all around the local area – follow the guided walk signs across the golf course, its a public right of way. We loved it, and the dog especially loved running (on lead!) across the smooth golf course. Obviously, watch out for flying balls! We paid £230 for this package in May 2021 – this is a non gifted review, fully paid for by ourselves. Its worth adding that Tewkesbury Park have now refurbished their doggy rooms even more, to add an enclosed area, so I will try to get an updated review as soon as I can!
